The government provides over 13 million euros for urban transport in the country after the protests of FTTU-CITUB!

Mar 12, 2026

Today, a meeting was held at the Council of Ministers between the Minister of Finance Georgi Klisurski and the Minister of Transport Korman Ismailov, with the participation of the president of CITUB Plamen Dimitrov, the chairman of FTTU eng. Alexander Shopov, and the chairmen of the trade union organizations at FTTU.

As a result of the discussions and following the protests and persistent demands of FTTU–CITUB, the Council of Ministers is providing funds amounting to over 5.7 million euros for municipalities in the country, as well as over 8 million euros for Sofia Municipality. The financing will allow a 5% salary increase for those employed in urban transport—both in Sofia, Varna, and Ruse, as well as in other cities in the country, effective from January 1, 2026.

This decision is an important step towards recognizing the work of those employed in public transport and proves that when unions consistently stand by their demands, results are possible.

The chairman of FTTU commented: "I thank the interim government for their quick response. They were the only ones who heard the voices of the workers. Naturally, we will continue the discussions with the regular government—whoever they may be—for the financing of urban transports, because not only is a salary increase required, but also an improvement in working conditions. Let me address those who wish to make reforms in urban transport—these reforms, whatever and however one might think to make them, will not happen without the unions!"

The Federation of Transport and Trade Unions at the CITUB emphasizes that the demands for a minimum 10% increase in remuneration for those working in urban transport in Sofia, Varna, and Ruse remain. Discussions on the topic are forthcoming with the regular government, with the mayors of the respective municipalities, as well as with employers in the sector through the mechanisms of collective bargaining.
